The album How Fair This Spot is a refined collection of classical works performed by internationally acclaimed saxophonist Misato Hanawa and pianist Ayano Shimada. Recorded at the prestigious ADDA auditorium in Alicante, Spain, during the summer of 2024, this release showcases a diverse repertoire that spans romantic lyricism, Polish nationalism, impressionist subtleties, and Jewish mysticism.

Featuring compositions by Rachmaninoff, Handel, Wieniawski, Scriabin, Bloch, Schumann, and Köhler, the album offers listeners an emotional journey through time and culture. Highlights include Rachmaninoff’s tender How Fair This Spot, Wieniawski’s spirited Polonaise de concert No. 1, Bloch’s vibrant Simchas Torah, and Schumann’s introspective Warum?. The recording concludes with a delightful bonus track: Köhler’s charming Vals de fleurs, adding a graceful touch to the collection.

The performances are characterized by Hanawa's warm and expressive saxophone tone paired with Shimada's elegant pianism. Together, they bring fresh interpretations to these masterpieces, blending technical virtuosity with deep emotional resonance.

This project also reflects Hanawa's personal journey during the pandemic—a time marked by solitude and introspection as she explored Europe’s landscapes and cultural richness. The album encapsulates her experiences and connections formed during this period, offering listeners a glimpse into her artistic evolution.

With a total runtime of 34 minutes and 59 seconds, How Fair This Spot is not only a testament to the artistry of its performers but also an invitation to rediscover classical music through the unique lens of saxophone-piano collaboration. Produced by Dativo Tobarra, this album promises to be a treasured addition for classical music enthusiasts worldwide.
